Argireline, known chemically as acetyl hexapeptide-8, is the most widely used cosmetic peptide in the world and is often sold as a topical alternative to injectable wrinkle treatments.
The idea behind it is genuinely clever. Botulinum toxin works by blocking a protein complex called SNARE, which nerves need in order to release the signal that makes a muscle contract. Argireline is a six amino acid copy of one end of SNAP-25, a piece of that same complex. In theory it competes for a place in the complex, slightly dampening the signal that causes the small repeated contractions behind expression lines.
In practice there is a large obstacle, and it is worth understanding before buying anything. The peptide is water loving and fairly large by skincare standards, and the outer layer of skin is built specifically to keep things like that out. Whether enough of it reaches the nerve endings under the muscle to matter is the central unresolved question.
You will find it in serums and creams at concentrations from a fraction of a percent up to about 10 percent. It is regulated as a cosmetic ingredient, not a drug.

The evidence on argireline is a good lesson in reading skincare claims, because it looks stronger at first glance than it is.
The most cited positive trial, published by Wang and colleagues in 2013, reported meaningful reductions in wrinkle depth. It was funded by the manufacturer. An independent evaluation published in 2023 found no significant wrinkle reduction at all.
A 2025 review of acetyl hexapeptide-8 in cosmeceuticals identified the core problem as skin permeability. The peptide struggles to cross the stratum corneum, the outer barrier layer, and whether it reaches the neuromuscular junction in any useful amount remains uncertain. Much of the current formulation work is about delivery systems rather than the peptide itself.
The mechanism is real and well described in the laboratory. What is not established is that applying it to intact human skin delivers enough of it to the right place to matter. Independent results are weaker than manufacturer results, which is the usual pattern and is worth remembering when reading any cosmetic peptide claim.
